Archie Lee Johnson


Archie Lee Johnson, 70, of Clarksville died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

A native of Clarksville, he was a son of the late Walter Pierce (Boss) Johnson, member of Hays Chapel Methodist Church, disabled Korean War veteran, and retired mechanic from Whitson-Morgan Motor Company after 28 years of service.

Survivors include his widow, Charlcie Foshee Johnson; mother, Leola Williams of Clarksville; one stepsister, Bert Park of Clarksville; one brother, Tommy Johnson of Clarksville; three stepchildren, Sheila Vincent of Gales Ferry, Conn., Debbie Brogan of Frederick, Md., and Brenda Wilson of Grove, Okla.; and seven stepgrandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chris Rink officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gerald Stall, Chuck Larrison, Loy Park, Gerald Laster, Carl Kirshberger, and Troy Taylor.

Betty Luckenback


Funeral for Betty Ruth Luckenback, 75, of Longmont, Colo., sister of Pearl Castleberry of Hunt, was Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at Howe Funeral Home in Boulder, Colo., with burial in Green Mountain Cemetery.

She was a former resident of Ozark, daughter of the late Lillian and Robert Barnes, widow of Clayton Luckenback; and was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.

Survivors are two sons, Ronald of California and Clay of Hart, Mich.; two daughters, Diane Foraste of the home and Cathy of California; two other sisters, Susie Cole of Delta, Colo., and Roberta Crawford of Billings, Mont.; five grandchildren; and niece, Lillian Childers of Ozark.

C. B. Trantham


C. B. (Boyce) Trantham, 88, a former resident of Lamar, died Monday, March 25, 2002, in Federal Way, Wash.

A native of Scottsville, he was a son of the late Taylor and Beulah Edwards Trantham, former resident of Oklahoma City, Okla., served in the U. S. Navy, lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Association, and had been a member of Pleasant Valley, Dumas Avenue and Rancho Village Baptist churches in Oklahoma City, Okla., for 57-plus years.

He was a former employee of Biltmore Hotel for four years prior to becoming a civilian guard at Tinker Air Force Base. After attaining the rank of sergeant and becoming active as an Oklahoma County Deputy Sheriff he transferred into the Tinker Field motor pool where he worked as a heavy equipment and aircraft engine mechanic. Upon retiring in 1960, he joined the National Campers and Hikers Association having spent time traveling and camping with fellow Roadrunner Club members.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Beverly Diane; two brothers, Bill and James; and one sister, Marjorie.

Survivors are his widow Grace Hamilton Trantham; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Cynthia of Federal Way, Wash.; five grandsons; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Holloway; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, at the Baggerley Funeral Home in Oklahoma City, Okla., with burial in Sunny Lane Cemetery.

Donna Gross Duvall


Donna Gross Duvall, 56, of Russellville died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at AMI St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville.

She was a native of Gainesville, Texas, daughter of the late Boyce Gross, member of Antioch Free Will Baptist Church, and an employee of Riverside Furniture for 20-plus years.

She is survived by one son, Ronnie Duvall of Dardanelle; one daughter, Rhonda Hampton of London; mother, Lois Heathcock Gross; one brother, Jerry Gross of Conway; six grandchildren, Jeff and Justin Duvall of Hector, Doug and Danielle Duvall and Andrew and Sherrilyn Whitmire, all of Dardanelle; and one nephew, Jason Gross of Conway.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, April 1, at Antioch Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Goates officiating.

Burial was in Rest Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Shinn Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Bill Butts, Ron Butts, Jim Powell, Steve Freeman, Mike Collins, and Larry English.

Honorary pallbearer was Dr. Jack Sternberg.

Dorothy F. Smith


Dorothy Fay Smith, 57, of Ozark, mother of Terri Broomfield of Coal Hill, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at her home.

She was a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter of the late Stanley and Ruth Williams Fletcher, and a self-employed floral designer.

Other survivors include one son, Shawn Jimenez of Puyallup, Wash.; one brother, William Fletcher of Concord, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Ashley Feathers, Michael Lee, and Tericka and Cole Broomfield.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, at Ozark First United Methodist Church with Rev. Vaughn Marsden officiating.

Burial was at Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.

Dr. Elizabeth Nelson


Dr. Elizabeth Buffalo Nelson, 32, of Clarksville died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at her home.

She was a native of Fayetteville, graduate of Carlisle High School, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and UAMS in Little Rock, and did her residency at Fort Smith. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a family practice physician at Clarksville Medical Group.

Survivors include her husband, Andy Nelson; two daughters, Lauren Elizabeth Nelson and Alexis Katharin Nelson, both of the home; parents, Richard (Dicky) and Dianne Buffalo of Carlisle; grandparents, Dorothy Buffalo of Carlisle, the late Robert Buffalo, and Bob and Betty Parker of Carlisle; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Suzanne and Brian Bible of Tampa, Fla., and Alexandria Buffalo of Carlisle; and one brother, Richard Buffalo of Carlisle.

Funeral was at noon Tuesday, April 2, at the Church of Christ in Clarksville with Mike Eppinette officiating. Burial followed at 4 p.m. at the Hebron Cemetery in Carlisle. Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Jamey Styles, David Walsh, Kent Reading, Dr. John Dunham, Dr. Ben Jacobs, and Dr. Jack Patterson.

Florence Edgar


Florence Edgar, 72, of Ozark died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Ozark Nursing Home.

A native of Coal Hill, she was a daughter of the late William and Rosie Gilbert Campbell, widow of Darrell Edgar, and Pentecostal.

Survivors include four daughters, Betty Ferguson and Nora Severson, both of Mulberry, and Cathern Parker and Mary Heginger, both of Mountainburg; six sons, Eugene Wiggins of Van Buren, Andy Edgar of North Vernon, Ind., James Edgar of Ozark, Darrell Edgar of Mulberry, and Joe and Bobby Edgar, both of Mountainburg; one sister, Lucy Sampley of Altus; two brothers, Jim Campbell of Greenwood and Floyd Campbell of Spiro, Okla.; 30 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Houston Cemetery at Alix with Rev. Ken Turpin officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.

George W. Brumley


Graveside services and burial for George Washington Brumley, 100, who died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Ozark Nursing Home, was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Lone Pine Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Kesterson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Morris, Jack Morris, James Dickerson, Charles Dickerson, George Carter, Charles Bangs, Ken Hatfield, Jim Pipkin, Rex Anderson, and Darrell Perry.

A native of Mountain Top, he was a son of the late Elijah and Maude Aitchison Brumley, farmer, Baptist, and was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Mitchell Brumley; two sisters, Shirley Green and Reba Watts; and two sons, Millard Dale Brumley and J. W. Brumley.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Sutherland and Doris Dickerson, both of Ozark; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Hermina R. Koerdt


Hermina Rinke Koerdt, 62, of Altus died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at her home.

A native of Altus, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Louise Rissie Rinke, widow of Jerome Koerdt, member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at Altus, 1957 graduate of Altus-Denning High School, graduate of Saint Edward Nursing School, registered nurse, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagle.

She is survived by two daughters, Sonita Pledger and Mikala Hudson, both of Altus; two brothers, Gerald Rinke of Altus and Leon Rinke of West Helena; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Pledger, Michael Pledger, Andrew Hudson, Nathan Hudson, and Patrick Hudson, all of Altus.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel. Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church with Rev. Hillary Filiatreau, O.S.B., officiating. Burial was at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Eddie McCormick, Mike Jones, Fred Holloway, James Dahlem, Dewayne Freeman, and Tim Pledger.

Irene Moffit


Irene Moffit, 72, of Alix, sister of Homer Qualls of Clarksville, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Mercy Hospital/Turner Memorial in Ozark.

She was a member of the Alix Assembly of God Church, native of Alix, and daughter of the late William and Bessie Scribner Qualls.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Moffit; four sons, Virgil Moffit and Clifford Moffit, both of Alix, Edmond Moffit of Ozark, and Paul Moffit of the home; one sister, Estelle Harmon of Altus; one other brother, Harold Qualls of Ozark; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Rev. C. E. Simpson officiating. Burial was in Houston Cemetery at Alix.

Active pallbearers were David Ellison, Daniel Moffit, Brian Moffit, Tom McCormick, Eddie McCormick, and Brian McCormick.

Honorary pallbearers were Dustin Moffit, Christopher Moffit and Andrew Day.

William (Billy) Cowell


William (Billy) Cowell, 75, of Clarksville died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at his home.

He was a retired Holiday Sand and Gravel employee, Army veteran, member of the Coal Hill VFW, and son of the late James John and Melissa Reufina Breedlove Cowell.

Survivors are his widow, Catherine Louise Guther Cowell; four daughters, Willena Calvin and Debra Cox, both of Gravois Mills, Mo., Karen Warner of Stover, Mo., and Theresa Henderson of Clarksville; seven sons, William I. Cowell Jr. of Cisero, Ill., John Cowell of Lamar, Donnie Guinnip of Kansas City, Kan., Ricky Guinnip of the home, Dale Guinnip of Paris, Michael Guinnip of Clarksville, and Jerrold Cowell of Lamar; one brother, James (Jimmy) Cowell of Hartman; 23 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Annie’s Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Terry Schlinker officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
