Dr. Dwight L. Blakely


Dr. Dwight L. Blakely, 96, of Clarksville died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Mountain Vista Health Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

A native of Coal Hill, he was a son of the late Thomas Benton and Mary Louise Bradley Blakely, and a graduate of the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville where he was captain of the baseball team in 1928.

In 1933 he graduated from the Illinois School of Podiatry in Chicago after which he had a podiatry practice in Canton, Ill., for 57 years, was a member of First Baptist Church in Canton, Ill., and participated in the Lincoln-Douglas Toastmasters Club.

Survivors include his widow, Maxine Shrigley Blakely of Clarksville; one son, Nicholas Gervas Blakely of New York, N. Y.; one daughter, Sara Sieker of Littleton, Colo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Calvary Baptist Church in Denver, Colo.

Darren C. Soard


Darren Clayton Soard, 23, of Clarksville died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

He was a son of the late Barbara Ann Soard, Baptist, former employee of Wal-Mart Distribution Center, and was preceded in death by a grandmother, Luella Pratt.

Survivors include his father, Fred Soard of Clarksville; one sister, Laquita Yates of Clarksville; and grandfather, Lawrence H. Pratt of Clarksville.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Robbie Jackson officiating. Burial was in Mt. Airy Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Colby Leeds, Chad Pratt, Nathan Pratt, Eric Wood, Ryan Ford, and Kevin Jacobs.

Honorary pallbearers were Brad Dodge, Trevor Flinn, Jeremy Handley, Brett Freeman and Ben Fiekema.

Gertie R. Prince


Gertie Rogers Prince, 93, of Hartman died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

She was a native of Pope County, daughter of the late Huddie and Arzona Bohannon Rogers, widow of Granville Houston Prince, former resident of Witt Springs, member of the Assembly of God Church, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Prince; two granddaughters, Tammy Prince and Deanna Shepard; two great-grandsons, Christian Turner and Rodney Burrows; and an uncle and aunt, Mun and Cal Bohannon.

Survivors include one son, Norman Prince of Little Rock; five daughters, Alta Scott of Coloma, Mich., Wanda Patterson of Caho-
kia, Ill., Lucille Keyes of Greenwood, Versie Cassidy of Stockton, Calif., and Shirley Jarvis of Hartman; 26 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; 41 great-great-grandchildren; and three great-great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Humphrey Chapel in Russellville with Rev. Lester Chisum officiating. Burial was in Solo Cemetery at Hector.

Active pallbearers were David Prince, Marion Prince, Arthur Brandenburg, Randy LeFlore, Carl Dodd, and Herman Varnell.

Honorary pallbearers were Hartsil Prince, Jimmy Evans, and Bucky Walters.

Vernon Stewart


Vernon Stewart, 60, of Dover died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.

He was a son of the late Inez (Scott) and Vernon Stewart Sr., computer technology coordinator at the Hector School District, and was preceded in death by one daughter, Shelli Stewart Lamberson.

Survivors include his widow, Anna Willis Stewart; two daughters and three sons-in-law, Sharla and Eric Hartzell of Dover, Kelly and Tim Whitson of Fayetteville, and Chris Lamberson of Russellville; one son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Sherry Stewart of Hogeye; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Etta and Eugene King of Fort Smith and Evelyn and Ross Clifton of Van Buren; three granddaughters, Shelby and Gracie Hartzell of Dover and Ashley Brewer of Fayetteville; and one grandson, Jake Brewer of Fayetteville.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Roller-Cox Chapel in Clarksville with Rev. Rick Smith and Rev. Mike Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Minnow Creek Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Danny Taylor, Randy Williams, Eric Hartzell, Eugene King, Merrell Shoptaw, and Chris Lamberson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Kilburn, Dale Lamberson, Ross Clifton, Garry Beavers, and the faculty and staff of Hector and Dover schools.

Memorials may be made to the Shelli Stewart Lamberson Memorial Scholarship Fund at Jones Learning Stewart at the University of the Ozarks, 415 North College Avenue, Clarksville, AR 72830.

Z. A. (Jim) Barnett


Z. A. (Jim) Barnett, 69, of Batesville, formerly of Altus, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at Batesville Hospital.

He was a retired carpenter, son of the late Henry R. and Zeffie Price Barnett, and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Faye Barnett.

He is survived by two sisters, Ruth Gardner of Altus and Ruby Lee Moss of Haynes City, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at the Altus Church of the Nazarene with Rev. James Kendrick officiating.

Burial was in the Houston Cemetery at Altus under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were John Baker, Robbie Kendrick, Sherman Gragg, Hubert West, Shane Waits, Rodney Silva, and Gaylen Williams.
