Pace Is Winner At State 4-H Broiler And Turkey Contest

Johnson County 4-H member Logan Pace was the reserve champion broiler barbecue winner at the Arkansas 4-H State Champion Broiler and Turkey Competition June 22 at the Rogers Convention Center.

The event was hosted by The Poultry Federation in conjunction with their annual poultry festival dubbed “A Galactic Eggspedition Beyond the Frontier” as a nod to their overall space cowboy theme.

Pace earned the chance to compete at state by placing in the top two at the District Chicken BBQ Contest in Little Rock. This opportunity gives 4-H members exposure to the poultry industry in Arkansas and the chance to network with industry leaders.

“The 4-H BBQ Contest is one of my favorite 4-H contests. It teaches kids practical skills about the poultry industry in Arkansas,” said Jeanie Rowbotham, Johnson County Extension Agent- 4-H.

Entrants were judged on how well they could start a charcoal fire, control the fire, food safety and handling and how well they cooked the chicken or turkey. When the chicken or turkey was cooked, they selected their best piece to be judged on appearance, color, doneness and taste.

Activities at the two-day festival included a golf tournament, trap shoot, fishing tournament, women in poultry brunch, scholarship auction, industry awards ceremony, all member barbecue contest, 4-H barbecue contest and concluded with the festival concert.
