Alice Gibbons

Alice Gibbons of Ozark died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

She was born July 20, 1925, in Plumerville to Reverend J.M. and Nora Dixon Barnett. She attended Ozark High School and graduated in 1946 from Hendrix College with a bachelor’s degree in music. On April 18, 1947, she married Dr. D.L. Gibbons and they remained very happily married until his death in 2008. She was a faithful and active member of the Ozark United Methodist Church, where she played the piano for many years. She is also remembered for many years as a Sunday school teacher and leader within the church. She taught for many years in the Ozark Elementary School and was a proud and active member of the auxiliaries of the Arkansas Medical Society and Turner Memorial Hospital.

She is survived by two sons, David L. Gibbons Jr. and wife, Iva Nell, of Clarksville, Arkansas, and James W. Gibbons and wife, Julia, of Stuttgart, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, David L. Gibbons III and wife, Rebecca, Jennifer Carrie Forand and husband, David, Andrew Richard Gibbons, Nora Elizabeth Gibbons, Jamie Shea and husband, Ben, Jeremy Gunn and wife, Emily, Jessie Stillwell and husband, Nathan, and Eli Gunn and wife, Kesha; and 13 great-grandchildren, Dylan, David Anthony, Rebekah, Jackie, Tori, Bridger, Christian, Jaxson, Savannah, Eliza, Greyson, Marley and Noah.

Funeral service was Monday, August 8, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Ozark with burial at Highland Cemetery in Ozark, Arkansas.

Pallbearers were Mike Gibbons, Andrew Gibbons, Dylan Gibbons, Anthony Gibbons, Johnny Maxwell, and David Gibbons III.

Brooksie Nell Jones

Brooksie Nell Jones, 85, of Lamar died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at Russellville.

She was a native of Erin, Tenn., daughter of the late Don and Emma Parrot Lowry and widow of Thomas Jones.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan Beckham of California; and one sister, Peggy Jacobs and husband, Elzie, of Lamar.

No funeral service will be held.

Arrangements were under the direction of Community Funeral Service.

Darrell D. Gilbert

Darrell Dwayne Gilbert, 54, of Ozark died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, in Bentonville.

He was a native of Bentonville and was preceded in death by his mother, Roberta Gilbert.

Survivors include one daughter, Lisa Gilbert of Mabelvale; one son, Jason Gilbert and wife, Mandy, of Garfield; father, Gene Copp Gilbert of Pea Ridge; one stepbrother, David Townsend of Bentonville; five grandchildren; uncle and aunt, J.D. and Annetta McCallister of Gravette; and several cousins in Johnson County.

There will be no funeral service.

Arrangements were under the direction of Community Funeral Service.

Joseph E. Peden

Joseph E. Peden, 90, of Clarksville died Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Clarksville Community Health and Rehab.

He was a native of the District of Columbia, son of the late Rudolph and Jessie Van Houton Peden, member of First United Methodist Church and the Johnson County Senior Activity Center, retired machinist and moulder, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Peden; and two sisters, Rena Pearl Smith and Betty Conner.

Survivors include two brothers, Buddy Peden and Van Peden; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Hardwicke Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Hanshaw officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Lonnie Qualls, Wayne Peden, Robert Sherwood, David Michael James, Ed Wolfe, and Richard Dresser.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Peden and Ryan Peden.

Pauline Joyce Campbell


Pauline Joyce Mykel Dunn Campbell, 79, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was a daughter of the late George and Audrey Lessenger Dunn and widow of William Allen Campbell.

Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia Paulette Reppert of Fort Madison, Iowa, and Deborah Joyce Hudson of London; one son, William Donald Campbell of Lomax, Ill.; five granddaughters, Ericka Breuer of Burlington,  Iowa, Chera Lee of Patterson, Megan Bence of London, and Heather Thie and Angela Hedges, both of Mediapolis, Iowa; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated and the remains were buried at Brock Cemetery five miles west of London.

Vira Marvel


Vira Marvel, 97, a former resident of Clarksville, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, in the Regencey Place of South Bend, Ind.

She was a native of Van Buren, daughter of the late Fred and Annie Carter Harris, former resident of Mishawaka, Ind., widow of Jettie N. Marvel of Hartman, and was preceded in death by one son, Norman Marvel, formerly of Clarksville; an infant grandchild; one sister, Katy Freeman; and one brother, Everett Harris.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Robert DeMeyer Sr. of Mishawaka, Ind.; three sons, Bobby R. Marvel and wife, Anna, of Wylie, Texas, Jerold Marvel and wife, Wendy, of Cayuta, N.Y., and Paul D.  Marvel Sr. and wife, Shirley, of Elkhart, Ind.; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date with Bubb Funeral Chapel assisting with arrangements.

Walter H. Reed Sr.

Walter Henry Reed Sr., 81, of Lawrence, Kan., died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was a native of Clarksville, son of the late Willy David and Helen Hogan Reed, retired custodian of the Douglas County Courthouse, and was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara J. Herbert Reed; two sisters, Irene Vaughn and Sidney McCullough; and two brothers, Willy Alfred Reed and Thirl McDonald Reed.

Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Walker, Wanda Reed, and Denise Reed, all of Lawrence, Kan.; two sons, Kevin Reed of Martinez, Calif., and Walter Reed Jr. of Florida; one sister, Carol Harris of Lawrence, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery.
